Heinlein - Joan, 93, of Johnstown, PA, went to be with the lord on Monday, October 6th, 2025. Born on September 22, 1932, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, the only daughter of William H. Zimmerman and Mary (Popovich) Zimmerman. Joan was raised by her Aunt Sophie and Uncle Henry T. O’Neil in Daisytown.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, Theodore E. Heinlein Sr., and her sons-in-law, Paul Heckman and Dave Korber. Joan was the devoted mother of five children: Susan Heckman, Deborah Helsel (Charles L.), Theodore E. Heinlein Jr. (Robin), Rose Ann Schellhammer (Terry L.), Karen Korber (fiancé Dave Custer) She was the proud grandmother of: David Korber (Katlyn Fraska), Micaela Helsel (Ean and Murphy Pringle), Caitie Helsel (Eddie Migut), Charlie Heckman, Kathy Heckman, Andy Heckman, Chad Heinlein, Stefanie Heinlein, DeLane Heinlein, and numerous great-grandchildren.
Joan graduated from Johnstown High School in 1950. She was employed by Bestform, Ceeb Miami Sportswear, and C.V. Elementary School. In 1952, she married her loving husband, Theodore E. Heinlein Sr., in Opa-locka, Florida, at the Marine Air Base where he was stationed. Joan enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and housekeeping, as well as spending time in her yard and garden. She loved caring for her children and grandchildren and was a devoted member of St. John’s Cathedral Church.
Joan will be laid to rest in Oak Cemetery beside her beloved husband, Theodore. Per Joan’s request, no viewing will be held. A Funeral Mass will take place at 10:00 AM on Friday, October 10th, 2025, at St. John Gualbert Cathedral (117 Clinton Street Johnstown, PA 15901).
