Ruby Mae Veney
December 17, 1947 – April 6, 2026
Ruby Mae, a devoted woman of faith and a beacon of warmth to all who knew her, was called home to be with the Lord on April 6, 2026. Born on December 17, 1947, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, to the late Cordy Gunby Sr. and Alberta Allen Gunby, Ruby was raised and educated in the Johnstown School District, where she proudly graduated from Johnstown High School. It was there that she married her first love, Robert L. Veney, and together they grew a family rooted in love and shared four children: Victoria, Veronica, Tina, and Robert Jr.
Seeking new horizons, Ruby relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, where her spirit truly blossomed. She became a pillar of the Historic Bethsaida Baptist Church in Stone Mountain. As a Church Mother and a faithful usher, Ruby served with a quiet grace and a servant’s heart that left a lasting impression on everyone who walked through the doors. Even as her health began to decline, her commitment to her church family remained steadfast and her membership remained a source of great pride.
Beyond the church walls, Ruby lived a life full of passion and color. An avid bowler since the 1980s, she found a second family on the lanes. Her dedication to the sport took her across the country—from the bright lights of Las Vegas and Reno to the historic streets of Cincinnati and Syracuse. These tournaments were about more than strikes and spares; they were about the lifelong friendships and memories she gathered along the way.
At home, Ruby found peace in her garden. She nurtured her flowers with the same tender care she gave to her loved ones. Her creativity also shone through her weekly visits to the Senior Center, where she loved crafting ceramics. However, her greatest joy was found in the kitchen. Ruby was a gifted cook who believed that a full table was a happy one. Her hospitality was legendary, and her home was a constant gathering place for family and friends to share a meal and a laugh.
Ruby’s legacy of love and devotion lives on through her daughters: Victoria Lynn Veney McGhee (Sterling) of Fayetteville, NC; Veronica Veney Bryant of Snellville, GA; and Tina Slack of Conyers, GA. She is reunited in peace with her son, Robert Lee Veney Jr.
Her memory will be cherished by her nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; her brothers, Leroy (Jacqueline), Cordy Jr., and Herman Gunby; her sister, Edna Gunby Wyatt; her aunt, Olivia Rowe; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. She is preceded in death by her brother, Nelson Gunby and her parents.
Ruby’s kindness, her laughter, and her unwavering faith will be missed by all, but her light will continue to shine in the hearts of those she touched.
