Senie Marlene Hill Quarles went to be with the lord on Thursday, October 2nd, 2025, at her Senior Apartment in Dover Delaware. Senie was born on June 20th, 1936, in Johnstown PA, she is the daughter of Otha Hill and Margaret Andrews. She is preceded in death by her husband John W. Quarles, Grandson Eric Maurice Moore, father Otha Hill, Mother, Margaret, her sister Sandra Gaskins, Philip and Ronald Andrews. She is survived by her loving daughters; Jacqueline Moore, Marcia Quarles-Braxton, Cleo Quarles, her sister LaVerne Briggs, In-laws James Braxton, John Moore, and Tanisha Reid. Her grandchildren, John Moore 4th, Michael Robinson, Macie Quarles, Robin Turner and Robert Turner jr, her great grandchildren Devon Washington, Yaseer, Naseem, Mikayla, Kendrick, Elijah and Ethan. Several Cousins, Nieces and Nephews. Senie graduated from Conemaugh East Taylor joint High School in 1954 and worked as a Domestic to save enough money to send herself to nursing school at York Hospital School of Nursing where she was the 1st black student to routinely assist in eye surgeries. Senie graduated in 1957 and received her RN board certification. She made many wonderful and lasting friendships with her nursing school classmates and remained close friends with many until her passing. After receiving her RN she moved to Philadelphia where she worked at University of Pennsylvania Hospital alongside her childhood friend Deanna Yates and met her future great friend Billy Johnson. She went on to become the Director of Nursing at Cedars Nursing Home where she became great friends with Author, Alice Dixon and many more staff members who loved her leadership. In 1988, Senie received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Ever forward-thinking Senie “made up her mind “and at the age of 50, went back to school to get her master’s degree in nursing from Villanova University where she graduated with honors. She soon began teaching nursing students at St. Francis University Nursing program, while she also cared for her father, Otha, in his final days. Senie then moved back to Philadelphia where she also taught nursing students at Holy Family. Senie missed floor work and returned to working directly with patients when she was in her 70’s as the Nurse Supervisor at Nazareth Hospital. She worked up until she received knee surgery and had to use a cane. BUT SENIE will not let set backs, set her back. She started volunteering with Jane Memorial United Methodist Church in the Nurse Unit, and made sure the church nurses were prepared and trained. In 2016 Mom was inspired to contribute to the Janes Drama Guild by writing and producing a play called Ruth and Naomi. It was “Standing Room Only “and the play received many rave reviews. Senie always gave ALL GLORY to GOD who inspired her writing and direction. In 2017 Senie “made up her mind” to move back to Johnstown to enjoy the rest of her life in the town she loved. She worked tirelessly for 3 years to make it happen. She didn’t even let the “Pandemic”& other setbacks deter her. In 2020, she moved back to Johnstown, where she met her “Crew” thru the Lovely Mary "Bunzey" McCray she met Gloria Porcher, Cynthia McCray, Starr Durham, Norma Jean Jones, JoAnn Jackson, and Roberta Harris. They filled her time in Johnstown with laughter and fun. Thank you Mary “Bunzey” for taking Mom into the CREW. She couldn’t climb the stairs at her Family church Cambria AME Zion, but GOD sent another group to Love her. She was blessed to attend Grove Avenue Baptist Church and Mount Sinai Baptist Church. In her final days “The Nurse” knew she needed to be closer to her “3 Girls”. In 2024 she reluctantly “made up her mind” to move to Dover Delaware into an ‘Independent Living’ senior apartment, where she made fast friends, talking for hours in the dining room and in the lounge. Sharing luncheons together, Movies and playing cards. Senie’s Sweet loving Spirit attracted the fellowship of family and many, many friends. We will never forget how Senie brought Light and Love wherever she went.
We Love you!!!
